Site Information

The Oran demonstration site is located in Scott County, Missouri, on a field in a corn-wheat-double crop soybean rotation.  Agriculture is the primary industry in the area with cotton, wheat, corn, soybeans and sorghum as the dominant crops.  Scott County is situated in the Missouri “Bootheel” near the Mississippi River.  It is a part of the Mississippi River Valley Alluvium Land Resource Area.  The Mississippi River Delta makes up 82% of the county and is relatively flat. The rest of the county is on uplands consisting of loess soil formed by ancient streams.  Soils in Scott County are naturally fertile, but the major concern for crop cultivation is the wetness and droughtiness of the area.  This demonstration site contains elements of two major soil associations.

Farrenberg-Lilbourn-Brosley association

  • Nearly level

  • Somewhat excessively drained to somewhat poorly drained

  • Loamy and sandy soils formed in alluvium

  • On low natural levees bordering former channels of the Mississippi River and its tributaries

  • Used for cultivated crops

  • Available water capacity is moderate to high

  • Natural fertility is medium

  • Organic matter is low

  • Main concerns are improvement of drainage, supplying enough water and maintaining fertility

Bosket-Dubbs-Malden·

  • Nearly level

  • Well drained to excessively drained loamy silts

  • Sandy soils formed in alluvium in broad areas old natural levees

  • Intensely cultivated

  • Natural fertility is medium to lush

  • Main concerns are improving surface drainage, supplying enough water and maintaining fertility.

Bosket soils

  • Loamy

  • Well drained

Dubbs

  • Silty

  • Well drained

Malden

  • Sandy

  • Level to gently undulating
