Precision agriculture offers a dual benefit to producers. First, by applying lime and nutrients to crops based on site-specific information, the producer can reduce input costs while optimizing returns. Second, by applying nutrients in a more precise method, levels of nutrients in the runoff from cropland can be reduced, improving water quality in lakes and rivers downstream. Precision farming techniques have been slow to be adopted in Northwest Missouri for several reasons. The technology is still expensive and the payout is not immediate. The practices require additional time and study to make informed management decisions. Finally, very few lime and fertilizer vendors in the area have invested in equipment for variable-rate application. |
